Geothermal green data center

#zeroemissions The town of Pomarance, in the province of Pisa, will host the first Green DataCenter made up of around 3.000 data servers with total “CO2=zero” impact. A worldpremiere. The Green Data Center will be located in Larderello, South_east of Pisa, an areaknown for its geothermal activity and already home od the oldest geothermal plantin the world.According to Rethink Energy’s project, all the electricity needed to power theservers and the primary and backup devices will come from renewable sources(geothermal), while the ample spaces within the building will be cooled usinghighenthalpy geothermal systems (characterised by temperatures above 150°C),guaranteeing a PUE ratio of less than 1.1.Rethink Energy conducted the energy, technical and financial feasibility studiesfor this project representing a true environmental revolution in the field of datacentres. Submersion cooling data center

#greenrevolution EU’s Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Northern Italy, is the third largest site ofthe European Commission, after Brussels and Luxembourg. Founded in 1960 as a nuclear research center, today it is considered as a leading research campus inEurope, with unique facilities and laboratories. The JRC has a submersion cooling data center with a maximum power of 1 MW, anew paradigm in the field. Compared to traditional cooling methods, which implyconsiderable costs in terms of energy, water and space, submersion cooling canbest address performance needs while significantly limiting the impact on theenvironment. The system designed by Rethink Energy uses geothermal energy with agroundwater circuit and one using water from the nearby lake. The energydissipated is used to heat a 12.000 sqm office building. This project represents a true environmental revolution in the field of data centres.Rethink Energy designed the mechanical, power, electrical and special installationsas well as being in charge of the MEP project management and works direction. The mix of solutions deployed include heart pumps, geothermal systems, lakewater, heat recovery and submersion cooling. TORRE GIOIA 22

#zeroenergy Torre Gioia 22 is a 121m tall skyscraper, part of the Porta Nuova project, and UBIBanca’s new headquarters in Milan.Designed by architect Gregg Jones (Pelli Clarke Pelli Atchitects’ Principal), TorreGioia 22 represents a new standard in executive office buildings, in whichtechnology and environmental sustainability blend into a stunning and futuristic“glass shard” 26-storey construction.Entirely coated with triple-glazed glass panels integrating 225.000 photovoltaicmodules (for a total surface of around 6.000 sqm), the building can bring down itsenergy needs by 75% compared to Milan's latest office towers. It is the first buildingin Italy to comply with Nearly Zero Energy Consumption Building standards. For this project, Rethink Energy took care of the works direction for the powerinstallation while ensuring that volume bonuses were correctly granted through theindependent modelling of the 22-storey tall building. In collaboration with StudioPlanning, Rethink Energy also employed the most advanced free cooling strategiesin order to significantly reduce energy consumption and reach new levels ofefficiency. The building was granted two sustainability certifications: LEED, on the constructionside, and WELL, on the well being of occupants.
