NEW GALEAZZI HOSPITAL

#thefuturethatheals The new Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio IRCCS (research) Hospital was built inside Rho Fiera’s MIND area (Milano Innovation District). The complex represents a model for Italy’s future hospitals, and is founded on the tight integration between care, research and training.   Numbers are impressive: 180.000 sqm of modern architectural concepts; 94 mt height (among Europe’s 8 tallest hospitals, and the world’s 75 tallest), 16 floors above ground; 30.000 sqm parking space and more than 600 beds.   Rethink Energy developed the new, advanced management and consumption-forecast system for the hospital’s heating/cooling plant. The control system can precisely forecast the energy consumption and select the most convenient sources, based on actual hourly cost acquired in a dynamic mode. Also, the system can monitor energy production units to compare actual performance with that declared by the supplier of the equipment.   The plant can supply 12MW in cooling and 8MW in heating with steam boilers, centrifugal compressor cooling units, heat recovery heat-pumps, district heating, steam cogeneration.   The new hospital was built making the best use of the most advanced solutions in terms of energy savings and environmental sustainability, reducing waste and noise-pollution levels to an absolute minimum. The hospital can apply for Gold V4 LEED certification for environmental sustainability also thanks to Rethink Energy’s mindful planning and design. MILANORD2

#newfreetime Milanord2 is a new shopping center of approx. 150.000 sqm, employing more than 6.000 staff, on the outskirts of Milan. It stands at the intersection of the city’s M1 and M5 underground lines.   This mall is among the most innovative on the European scene: in addition to the 350 shops, it includes several leisure areas (sports, theme areas such as the pirate ship or the jungle, water games for children and Milan’s first “surfer wave” simulator) and a 41.000 sqm piazza (called Skyplaza) that will host games, concerts and other outdoor and indoor events.   Rethink Energy designed a condensation ring to serve the commercial units and the sub-stations supplying fluids for ambient-air treatment. It uses geothermal sources and the existing district heating grid. The total cooling power is approx 30 MW while the heating power is 12 MW.   Rethink Energy was in charge of the mechanical, energy, electric and special systems’ design, and the MEP coordination and project management, combining heat pump, geothermy, teleheating and waterloop technologies. SESTO SAN GIOVANNI NEW RAILWAY STATION

NUOVA STAZIONE SESTO SAN GIOVANNI

#archistars Year:2022 The works at Sesto San Giovanni’s new railway station represent the first step of MilanoSesto, an urban regeneration project involving the rehabilitation of former industrial sites in Italy (and mostly Europe). It will transform an area of 1.5 Million sqm, redesigning the entire urban layout of the city and contributing to redefine the new boundaries of the Milan metropolitan area.   The project was developed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Ottavio Di Blasi & Partners.   The masterplan provides for the construction of a steel and glass bridge above the existing railway line to connect the two parts of the city that were divided by the tracks: Piazza 1° Maggio and the former Falck industrial area. The new station will host businesses, bars and services for travellers and visitors.   The pedestrian bridge was designed according to sustainability standards: the great glass roof will be fitted with a 110 by 28 m photovoltaic cap that should supply enough energy to cover the station’s entire electricity needs.   For this futuristic and sustainable project, Rethink Energy was in charge of the  MEP works direction.
